Sacred land under siege - Zuni Salt Lake
    By BEN NEARY/The New Mexican - 1/7/2001
ZUNI PUEBLO -- Gray dust spews in a torrent from under the wheels of a
pickup as the two game wardens drive toward Zuni Salt Lake. The lake
itself, when it comes into view, offers a sad and surprising view.
Despite being land sacred to a half-dozen Southwestern tribes, much of
Zuni Salt Lake looks like a transplanted segment of crumbling New Jersey industrial shoreline...READ IT...

Choctaws help community during "Deep Freeze"
    OKIT
The Choctaw Nation proved their willingness to provide community assistance in the recent "deep freeze" of Oklahoma. The unprecedented ice storm that downed power lines across southeastern Oklahoma created tremendous household problems for thousands of Choctaw people and their neighbors. Cities, even cities as large as McAlester, were without electricity, and city Mayor Dale Covington was especially thankful the Choctaw Nation located an emergency generator to be brought in from Kentucky to run the McAlester water treatment plant...READ IT...

James Warren Mooney faces charges for giving hallucinogen to non-Indians
    SANTA FE NEW MEXICAN
BENJAMIN, Utah - James Warren "Flaming Eagle" Mooney says he has seen the mystical power of the tiny peyote cactus free people from drug addiction and mental illness.
Now the medicine that he administers to his followers could cost Mooney his own freedom.
On Oct. 10, sheriff's deputies raided Mooney's home and his adjoining church, seizing a ceremonial pipe, a computer and 33 pounds of peyote. Mooney was charged with a dozen counts of drug trafficking and one count of racketeering.
If convicted, he could be sentenced to life in prison.

Cradleboards/Project shows new Mothers Traditional Use
    LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR
Sirila's use of the cradleboard, a Native baby carrier used for centuries,
inspired the Medical Center's Cradleboard Project. Developed about three months ago, the project educates expecting mothers about child care.
It also shows that age-old child-rearing traditions are still valid, said
JoAnne Scott, a registered nurse at the center. Today, 32 Native and
non-Native women participate in the program. Each gets introduced to
cradleboard use during various stages of their pregnancies.READ IT...

    TODAY IN HISTORY JANUARY 8
    .
{EXCERPTED FROM On This Date In North American Indian History
    By Phil Konstantin}

1779: Virginia Governor Patrick Henry, today, orders the Virginia militia to mount up a campaign against the Chickamaugas. Former CHEROKEE Chief Dragging Canoe, and his followers, have joined the CHICKAMAUGAs. They will continue to attack American settlements despite peace treaties signed by conservative CHEROKEE Chiefs.

1877: General nelson "Bear Coat" Miles catches up to Crazy Horse, Little Big  Man, Hump, Two Moons and their followers at Battle Butte, in southeastern  Montana. Miles' soldiers attack through the 3 foot deep snow. The war chiefs  occupy the soldiers while the women and children escape during a blizzard.
The weather causes Miles to disengage. According to Army records,
approximately 600 warriors, approach the soldiers, and a 5 hour battle starts.  The second half of the battle is fought in a "blinding snow storm". The Army  drives the Indians through the Wolf Mountains, toward the Big Horn Mountains. The Army will report 3 soldiers killed, and 8 wounded. They estimate the Indians' losses to be high. Captains Edmond Butler and James S. Casey and First Lieutenant Robert McDonald, 5th infantry, will be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for their actions in the fighting. The troops then return to Fort Keogh at the mouth of the Tongue River in east-central Montana.
