The Death of a River Looms Over Choice for Interior
Post

....Mr. Rodriguez was one of many witnesses to what
state officials have
called the worst environmental disaster in Colorado,
a spill of cyanide
and acidic water from a gold-mining operation that
killed virtually every
living thing in a 17-mile stretch of the Alamosa River,
though causing no
human injuries.
The company responsible for the leakage, the Summitville
Consolidated
Mining Corporation, declared bankruptcy, and its major
officers fled the
country, leaving taxpayers with a cleanup bill that
is approaching $150
million. READ

{EXCERPTED FROM On
This Date In North American Indian History
By Phil Konstantin}
1802: President Thomas Jefferson believes that the
Indians have more land than they need. He feels that if they become
indebted at the government trade houses, they will sell their lands to
pay the debts. He has also voiced the opinion that if they become
farmers, they will need less land. Today, he will address the WEA,
POTAWATOMI, and MIAMI Indians on that latter issue.
He extols the virtues of renewable
food and clothing supplies. "We will with pleasure furnish you with
implements for the most necessary arts, and with persons who may
instruct you how to make and use them." .

1831: Eneah Micco (Fat King), Principal CREEK Chief of
the lower towns, and others, decide on this date to send representatives
to Washington D.C.. They want to talk to Secretary of War Lewis Cass
about Alabama laws, and about whites settling on their lands. The
government's response will be, as always in Indian removal questions, "we
cannot help you, go west."
