    TODAY IN HISTORY JANUARY 22
    .
    {EXCERPTED FROM On This Date In North American Indian History
    By Phil Konstantin}

    1813: British Col.Henry Proctor, with 600 soldiers, and 600 warriors attack General James Winchester's, and his 850 soldiers, in Monroe (called Frenchtown, at the time), Michigan. Winchester's forces were on split up on both sides of the Raisin River. When the British and Indians attacked the forces on the south bank during a snow storm, they killed almost 100 American. Winchester would be taken prisoner. He would surrender his entire force of almost 500 men, today, even though his troops on the north side of the river were virtually untouched by the fighting. Proctor would march his able-bodied captives to Fort Malden. Leaving 64 wounded Americans in Frenchtown under a limited guard. Angry Indians would later attack and kill most of the wounded. This attack would be called the "Raisin River Massacre", and it would become a battle cry of the War of 1812.

      1879: Captain Henry Wessells, and troops A,E,F, and H, 3rd cavalry, a finds Dull Knife's Fort Robinson escapees near the telegraph line from Fort Robinson to Hat Creek. The Indians will not surrender, so Wessells attacks.
        According to Army reports, all of the remaining escapees are killed or attacked. Three soldiers are killed, and Captain Wessells, and 2 other soldiers are wounded. Twenty-three CHEYENNE are listed as killed, and 9 were captured. The captured CHEYENNE say that Dull Knife was killed by artillery during a battle, a few days before (probably on January 14th).

    {click for KOTA weather}

    HEATING FUND
    Emergency heating funds....the weather has turned sharply colder and it appears that it will be a much colder winter than the last few we have experienced creating an incredible hardship for many.
    Money orders sent to the Grass Roots Oglala Lakota Oyate will be distributed (or paid on account) for those in need of heating assistance.  In effect we will be creating a "voucher" system.  Your donation may be of any amount and several put together to meet minimums necessary for orders.
