UPDATED JANUARY 1, 2001
THE STAFF OF NATIVE NEWS WOULD LIKE TO WISH YOU
AND YOURS A SUCCESSFUL NEW YEAR..MAY IT BRING BOTH PEACE AND JUSTICE
FOR ALL CREATION!
What you begin a great work you
can't expect to finish it all at once;
therefore do you and your brothers
press on, and let nothing discourage
you till you have entirely finished
what you have begun.
Now, Brothers, as for me, I
assure you I will press on, and the contrary
winds may blow strong in my
face, yet I will go forward and never turn
back, and continue to press
forward untill I have finished, and I would
have you do the same...........
Though you may hear birds singing
on this side and that side, you
must not take notice of that,
but hear me when I speak to you, and take
it to heart, for you may always
depend that what I say shall be true.
-Teedyuscug / Delware
(the above sent by the g-grandson of Between the Logs,
Wendat)

May the creator guide your path
May you learn the lessons that
come your way
May you choose not the easiest
road but the one that will let you walk proud as our people
May you see the world around
you with the wonder of a child and the wisdom of an elder.
May you have what is best for
you even if it wasn't what you thought you wanted.
May at the end of this coming
year you look back and say I did my best.
May you always remember those
who came before us and the seventh generation ahead of us for they are
who we are.

{EXCERPTED FROMOn
This Date In North American Indian History
By Phil Konstantin}
1891: While pursuing Indians after the massacre at Wounded
Knee, members of the sixth cavalry are encountering Indians and extremely
cold weather. For their actions in "heading the advance across White River
partly frozen, in a spirited movement to the effective assistance of troop
K," First Lieutenant Benjamin H. Cheever, Jr. and Sergeant Joseph F. Knight,
troop F, will be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Second Lieutenant
Robert L. Howze, company K, will also receive the award for "bravery in
action."
Captain John B. Kerr will also
get the Medal of Honor... "for distinguished bravery while in command of
his troops in action against houstile SIOUX Indians on the north bank of
the White River, near the mouth of Little Grass Creek, South Dakota,
where he defeated a force of 300 BRULE SIOUX warriors, and turned
the SIOUX tribe, which was endeavoring to enter the Badlands, back
into the Pine Ridge Agency." With 5 men, Sergeant Fred Myers, company
K, held his position "against superior forces." He was also awarded
the highest medal in the land. Corporal Cornelius Smith, Company K
was also awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the fighting.
{PETITION
TO RESCIND THE MEDALS OF DISHONOR }
1965: The NISQUALLY Nation in Washington State, issue
a proclamation today denouncing their treatment by the United States.
The document states that the United States has not lived up to its
treaty agreements. The NISQUALLY Nation therefore declared that in
regards to non-NISQUALLY people "they no longer have the right to
reside, tax or hunt or fish upon said lands or waters, within the
ceded areas of the treaties made with the Indian peoples." They also
compare the treatment of the Indian peoples by the United States
Government, as similar to that of Hitler and the Jews.
