Canada's Bleak North Is Fertile Ground for Suicide
By JAMES BROOKE
NYTIMES
QALUIT, Nunavut — Athletic and stylishly dressed, Geela
Patterson, adviser to the new territorial government on women's issues,
was the kind of woman Inuit youth admired. Then one bright day last June,
a time when the Arctic sun never seems to set, Ms. Patterson, a suicide
prevention counselor, took her own life.
Her suicide gave a rare jolt to people here in the
territorial capital, which has the highest suicide rate in Nunavut, which
in turn has the highest suicide rate in Canada.

| Dec 18, UPDATE: Rick Barrett reports this evening
he was not at all pleased with the severe cut to his (and other articles
in the edition in which the above story appears) and plans to, hopefully,
publish a balanced article when news is received of President Clinton's
clemency decision. He stated that his phone was very busy today with
several calls from Leonard Peltier supporters who expressed their outrage
at the extremely slanted article which failed to mention that all charges
had been dropped against Leonard Peltier in Milwaukee as "fraudulent." |
